In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
