A group of seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
